There’s an essential step every customer takes before hiring your small business: They have to find you first. For most customers that means using their computers or smartphones to search for local businesses. For you, that means making sure your business can be found by search engines—and ranks higher than your competitors.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a long-term strategy that can take months to pay off. But, according to online marketing platform LocalVox, there are some quick steps that will boost your small business’ ranking on search engines.
- Use your keywords. When customers search for a business like yours, what words or phrases do they use? When thinking about how you want to found, be as specific as possible, including the city where you do business, and use those keywords consistently in your content, social posts and on your website.
- Ask for feedback. According to a Marketing Land survey, 90% of customers say online reviews influence their purchasing decisions. Reviews influence search engines as well, establishing your credibility as a local business with Google and Facebook. Ask happy customers to post reviews and make sure you respond graciously to any negative feedback.
- Grow your social footprint. Even if you don’t think your customers read your tweets, you can guarantee Google sees them. An active presence on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn signals search engines that you are an authority in your field and a trusted local business.
